HAVING ESTABLISHED that there was no fire in the hotel, the alarm had been turned off. Guests were sent back to their rooms and told to wait until they had spoken to the police. Although they knew from the CCTV that Finn and Kat had checked in and stayed the night in Room 17, Ruth wanted every room thoroughly searched. The staff on reception hadn’t seen a young couple leaving the hotel that morning and were fairly sure they would have noticed if they had.

Ruth and Nick cautiously approached Room 17. The anxious-looking Duty Manager had an electronic master key in his hand. Behind them, two uniformed police officers stood ready for the arrest.

Nick banged on the door. ‘Police! Open up!’

They waited for a few seconds. Ruth listened carefully but there was no sound of movement from inside.

Nick banged again. ‘Police! Open the door!’

There was still no answer, so Ruth gave the Duty Manager a nod and he used his master key to open the door.

When they entered, it was clear within a few seconds that Finn and Kat had gone. Nick inspected the bathroom and pulled back the shower curtain. ‘Nothing, boss.’

‘Shit! They can’t have got very far if they don’t have a vehicle,’ Ruth said, thinking aloud.

‘Unless they’ve stolen another one. How did no one see them leave?’

Ruth looked at the Duty Manager. ‘Do you have CCTV on all the exits to the hotel?’

He shook his head. ‘There’s CCTV on the main entrance, the guest car park, and around the side. Coverage to the rear of the hotel is minimal as we don’t tend to need it there.’

‘Thank you. We’re going to need to look at all your CCTV from this morning.’

The Duty Manager nodded, his eyes blinking nervously. ‘I’ll get straight onto that now.’

Nick came out of the bathroom with a small, aluminium bin. ‘Boss, you need to take a look at this.’

Peering inside, she could see clumps of brown hair. There was also an empty box of black hair dye. ‘They’ve changed their appearance, which is pretty smart.’

Nick gestured to the bin. ‘I guess they didn’t count on us finding this.’

Ruth glanced over at the two uniformed officers. ‘Take witness statements from everyone in the hotel. Get their names and contact details. I want to know if they saw a young couple anywhere in the hotel this morning, particularly when the fire alarm was going off. The man has shaved or very short hair, the girl has black hair.’

The constables went out of the room.

Ruth held the door and motioned to Nick to come outside. ‘When they left the room, they must have come down this corridor.’ Glancing left, she saw the small red Fire Alarm. The glass front had been broken. ‘They set off the fire alarm here.’

Nick gestured to the Fire Exit sign further down the corridor. ‘And in all the confusion, they headed out there.’

Ruth and Nick strode down the corridor, went out through the fire exit, and soon found the double fire doors wide open.
